GAMBIA: Study on opportunities and constraints of the Endemic Ruminant Livestock (ERL) commercialisation in Gambia, Guinea, Mali and Senegal for the Regional Project of Endemic Livestock Sustainable Management (PROGEBE)

Project description

The Regional Project of Endemic Livestock Sustainable Management (PROGEBE), funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), as well as the African Development Fund (ADF), had as an overall objective to reduce poverty and improve food security by the increase of Endemic Ruminant Livestock (ERL) productivity in the agro-pastoral areas of Gambia, Guinea, Mali and Senegal, considering the environmental issues (drought, demographic pressure, deforestation, farming, and so on). The six-year project consisted of three components: i) Preserve Endemic Ruminant Livestock (ERL); ii) Increase milk and meat productivity; iii) Improve meat and dairy products commercialization in a favourable institutional and environmental framework.

Services provided

In 2012/ 2013, CA 17 International, in collaboration with the Breeding Institute and the CIRAD, carried out, on behalf of the PROGEBE, the study on the marketing opportunities and constraints of the ERL in Gambia, Guinea, Mali and Senegal, an integral part of the second strategic axis of the Project, entitled “Improving the value (marketing and trade) of the ERL”.

The work carried out by CA 17 International has contributed to the design and implementation of strategies enabling producers and commercial actors to expand and strengthen the ERL market. More specifically, the study made it possible to: i) Identify the most pertinent innovations to improve and reinforce the competitiveness of ERL products; ii) Propose strategies for the implementation of these innovations into the supply chain; and iii) Propose an overall communication strategy suitable for the market.
