Project description

The study was divided into three parts (one per sector):

  • Part 1: Feasibility study for a distillation and processing centre for aromatic and medicinal plants in the Chefchaouen Region (Talembote area identified by GEFRIF as a potential site);
  • Part 2: Feasibility study for a mushroom sorting and packaging centre in the Chefchaouen (Dardara) and Larache (Beni Arousse) regions;
  • Part 3: Feasiblity study for two honey production centres in order to exploit the honey-bearing resources of the Talambot (province of Chefchaouen) and Chakrane (province of Al Hoceima) regions.

Activities put in place to conduct the study included for each component:

  • Assessment of the current situation – local production conditions, potential and constraints, mapping, structure of the profession;
  • Institutional study;
  • Economic study of the sector;
  • Standard technical study of a centre project;
  • Economic and financial evaluation for the feasability of a centre;
  • Socio-economic and environmental impact assessment;
  • Conclusions and recommendations.

Project goals

The objective of the project was to carry out feasibility studies, ultimately aimed at supporting the organisation of three sectors of activity related to forest resources (aromatic and medicinal plant production, mushroom production, and honey-bearing resources) around technical and commercial structures (centres) that enabled the economic and social development of the local resource in terms of biodiversity so that rural actors were provided with the means enabling them to benefit from the potential added value of natural products (processed or packaged) of their environment. The establishment of these structures involved the registration of producers in a voluntary approach to participate in local development, with the support of the regional administration and technical prescribers. The objective of the contract was therefore to prepare the technical, economic, institutional, commercial and financial elements to assess the appropriateness of creating valuation units, to define the methods, the support and the scope of required resources.
