NIGER: Food security support in small-scale irrigation (ASAPI)

Project description

Key Program Outcomes:

• Operational professional organisations by strengthening their project management capacities;
• Establishment of management and empowerment committees;
• Increasing the incomes of small producers by developing new production and marketing channels;
• Agricultural production independent of climatic variations by small irrigation;
• Protected water resources and environmental degradation under control, supply of drinking water to villages;
• Opening up several difficult-to-access areas;
• Establishment of a credit structure independent of the program.

Project goals

The objective of the ASAPI program was to contribute to the improvement of living conditions by strengthening the food security of the Nigerien population, to make the populations of the regions of Madaoua and Zinder less vulnerable to food crises and climate change and to sustainably increase the agricultural incomes of beneficiaries.

Services provided

• Project management and leadership (Project Director provided by CA 17 International): programming, coordination, monitoring;
• Permanent Expert, UGP Zinder Adviser;
• Installation of the project and implementation of the project manager and short-term experts:
• Recruitment of local experts;
• Methodological support for the implementation of the project, support for the development of participatory methods for producer and women’s groups;
• Provision of specialists to train rural development beneficiaries in the field by involving them in their own development;
• Organisation of exchange visits and study visits for farmers’ groups, local elected representatives of local authorities, decision-makers and administrations’ technical staff.
