Project description

The activities implemented to carry out the project included:

  • Strengthening of professional breeders’ organisations by supporting the establishment of consultation framework integrating economic actors from the rural world and local elected officials;
  • Supporting the implementation of the Rural Code: elaboration of the pastoral code, support for departmental, communal land commissions and establishment of a Permanent Secretariat of the Regional Rural Code (SPRCR);
  • Improving animal health services;
  • Supporting the marketing of animals and their products: establishment of a livestock market;
  • Establishment of a monitoring and evaluation system for the livestock sector: implementation of monitoring indicators;
  • Establishment of a monitoring and evaluation system for the project.

Project goals

The objective of the PASEP program was to secure and/or develop the livestock economy in the Tahoua region, by strengthening the capacities of farmers. The project included a main component of advisory support to breeders’ organisations and three complementary components to consolidate breeders’ projects through the systematic intermediation of Land Commissions (COFOs), to develop animal health services through the promotion of private veterinary and livestock support services and to facilitate the marketing of livestock and to enhance the value of other livestock production.

Services provided

The main outcomes of the project were:

  • Strengthening the capacities of farm organisations;
  • Land Commissions are operational and contribute to a more rational, efficient and equitable management of pastoral and agro-pastoral resources;
  • Animal health services meet the specific needs of livestock breeding in pastoral areas;
  • Marketing is facilitated by the development of the main markets and livestock products better valued by selective support;
  • A livestock monitoring and evaluation system is implemented with the MRA.
